There are very few who are driven to be the best. They rise to the top of their profession and are often celebrated for their achievements. They are also largely misunderstood.
To be elite requires a dedication and a sacrifice that very few people on the planet can relate to. It can often lead to intense criticism as a means to make you more ‘relatable’.
Elite performers must learn to drown out all the noise. They need to stay focused and not get derailed by other distractions. They need a carefully chosen group of people who they can intimately trust.
I serve a select group of highly motivated elite performers, who are constantly seeking to raise the bar, without losing themselves in the process.
The Performance Challenge
Why is it that so few people are able to reach the very top of their profession, and then stay there?
Many people fantasize about the idea of being an elite performer. Many even self-anoint themselves as a top performer following fleeting success. Very few are worthy of the acclaim.
Elite performance is a result. And very few elite performers are driven by results. They are guided by passion. It’s passion that gets them out of bed every morning to dedicate their time to the profession they love. It’s dedication to improvement that wills them to go through the dull and boring repetition, even when no-one is watching.
And yet, from the outside, elite performers are only judged for their results. They are put on a pedestal to be shot at.
The Performance Opportunity
Theodore Roosevelt wisely wrote, “It’s not the critic who counts. The credit belongs to the man (or woman) who is actually in the arena.”
The timeless piece of writing is evidence that the challenge for elite performers is not new. Part of the human condition is to bring down those that thrive, who excel, who rise above.
Failure can be agonising. The glory of success is often only fleeting. It takes a special soul to dedicate their existence to such short-lived moments.
Theodore surmised the mindset of every elite performer, “…if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
